Built by the Portuguese in 1619, then expanded by the Dutch in the 17th and 18th centuries, this fort was a key stronghold for colonial trade and defense. After breakfast, proceed to Kurikkaduwan Jetty and take a short boat ride to the island of Nainativu. Here, visit the sacred Nagapooshani Amman Temple, an ancient shrine dedicated to Goddess Parvati. According to legend, the temple was originally built by the Nagas and is associated with the divine serpent. The temple is also famous for its festivals, during which thousands of Hindu devotees from all over the region gather for worship. The site holds great religious and cultural importance, making it one of the must-visit spiritual landmarks in Jaffna. |
